WOODEN WINDOWS: WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES ?

Maintenance of wooden windows

THE ADVANTAGES OF WOODEN WINDOWS

  • Wood is an excellent insulator

  • Wooden windows offer a warm and authentic look

THE DISADVANTAGES OF WOODEN WINDOWS

  • Wooden windows are often neglected in favour of other materials such as PVC or aluminium. As wood is a living material, wooden windows require regular maintenance, unlike PVC and aluminium.

  • Wooden windows are heavier than PVC or aluminium windows.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT TYPE OF WOOD FOR YOUR WINDOWS

We advise you to choose naturally rot-proof wood species such as exotic woods (e.g. teak). These woods are naturally resistant to fungi, mould and insects. If you choose a type of wood that is sensitive to these attacks, we advise you to treat your wooden windows. You can opt for 2-in-1 products: insecticides and fungicides at the same time. Within our range, you will find Wood Bliss and Wood Bliss High-C (concentrated version of Wood Bliss). These products have a preventive and curative function.

MAINTENANCE OF WOODEN WINDOWS: WHICH PRODUCT TO CHOOSE ?

When purchased, some wooden windows have already received a finish (saturators, oils, paints, stains, etc.). As outdoor wood is constantly exposed to the elements, this protection must be renewed to keep the wooden windows in good condition. Without protection, window wood will tend to turn grey or even black.

In general, if you are not familiar with the previous finish, or if you are not applying the same product, we advise you to remove the previous finish by sanding or stripping. If no protective product has been applied to the wooden windows you have just bought, we advise you to protect them as soon as possible (a few weeks after installation).

There are various products that can be used to maintain your wooden windows :

  • The paints will allow you to waterproof your wood and protect it against UV rays. They offer a modern look and make the wood opaque. This means that the natural grain of the wood is hidden. The paints protect your wooden windows for a long time (about 5 years). On our website, you will find Exterior Wood Paint PBE900 and Exterior Wood White Paint BLE900.

  • Stains will protect your wooden windows by creating a film on the surface of the wood. This protection is durable. Maintenance should be carried out approximately every 5 years. At Anova Bois, we do not sell stains because of the difficulty of application. Indeed, they require sanding during maintenance and application of a new coat.

  • The saturators will allow you to nourish your wood, to protect it from UV and bad weather. Unlike paints, they are not opaque. They let the natural grain of the wood appear. The saturator is the product that offers the most natural look. It is not film-forming. The maintenance frequency of your wooden windows with a saturator is about 2 years. It is done without sanding by simply applying a new coat. On our website, the Siding Saturator SB600 is very suitable for softwoods, hardwoods or autoclaved wood. For exotic woods, the Exotic Wood Saturator SBE600 will provide protection for wooden windows.
