Description

The Douglas Wood Saturator SD600 is a product specifically developed to deeply penetrate Douglas wood and provide long-lasting protection against outdoor aggression. Widely used in exterior construction, Douglas wood is appreciated for its stability, natural durability and its warm pinkish-brown hue. However, when exposed to UV rays and rain, it tends to grey quickly if it is not protected.

Thanks to its formula rich in anti-UV agents, SD600 effectively limits this greying phenomenon and preserves the original appearance of Douglas wood. Its slightly pink tint helps even out and enhance the natural colour of the wood, creating an elegant and uniform finish on your decks and cladding.

Unlike a varnish or a stain, SD600 is non-film-forming: it does not create a surface layer but penetrates the wood. The result: it does not peel, even after several seasons, and is very easy to maintain with a simple reapplication — no heavy sanding or stripping required. It is the ideal solution for quick and long-lasting maintenance of your Douglas exterior structures.

In addition to its technical efficiency, the Douglas Saturator SD600 is formulated in a water-based version: environmentally friendly, free of harmful solvents and low-odour. Easy to apply with a wide brush or sprayer, it dries quickly (2 to 4 hours to the touch) and allows you to treat large surfaces such as Douglas decks or cladding without difficulty.

BENEFITS OF THE DOUGLAS SD600 SATURATOR

  • Enhanced protection against UV rays, rain and humidity.
  • Non-film-forming: does not form a film and does not peel.
  • Ideal for decks, cladding, pergolas, screens and Douglas furniture.
  • Fast-drying: touch-dry in 2 to 4 hours.
  • Non-greasy and non-slip: perfect for safe decking.
  • Easy maintenance: no heavy sanding required for reapplications.
  • Water-based, low odour, solvent-free.
  • Ready to use.
  • Tool cleaning with clear water.
  • Enhances and harmonises the copper-brown colour of Douglas wood.

HOW TO APPLY THE SATURATOR

Surface preparation:

  • The wood must be clean, dry and dust-free. If the surface is dirty, use the N100 Cleaner (or the concentrated version N140 Cleaner). If the wood has greyed, apply the DG105 Brightener before treatment to restore an even colour and optimise saturator penetration.

Product application:

  • Ready-to-use product: shake well to homogenise pigments.
  • Apply a regular coat with a wide flat brush (spalter), standard brush or sprayer.
  • Always spread the product evenly to avoid excess.
  • On new wood: 1 coat is enough.
  • On older or very absorbent wood: apply a second coat after 2 to 24 hours, only if the wood still absorbs.

Drying time:

  • Touch-dry in 2–4 hours, fully dry in 24 hours.
  • Wait 24 hours before foot traffic.
  • Avoid tarps, rugs and heavy loads during the first days.

PRECAUTIONS BEFORE APPLICATION

  • Apply between 10°C and 30°C.
  • Do not apply in direct sunlight or on hot wood.
  • Do not apply in rainy weather.
  • Do not apply on greyed, blackened or mouldy wood without prior treatment.

PRECAUTIONS AFTER APPLICATION

  • Do not cover the surfaces immediately.
  • Avoid sliding heavy furniture over the surface.

PRO TIPS

To ensure successful application of the Douglas Saturator SD600, it is important to follow a few simple best practices:

  • Ideal season: apply the saturator in spring or autumn, when temperatures are mild and stable. In summer, work during the cooler hours (early morning or late afternoon) and in the shade to avoid too-rapid evaporation. Winter, being cold and damp, should be avoided.
  • Wood preparation: the wood must be clean and dry. If your Douglas has greyed, use a DG105 Brightener to revive its colour and achieve a uniform base. For new wood, wait 2 to 4 weeks after installation so the pores open up for better penetration. Douglas wood often has a “glazed”, smooth factory finish that prevents proper absorption; in that case, wait 3 to 6 weeks or scrub with Black Soap SN800 + warm water to accelerate the process.
  • Application method: always apply in the direction of the wood grain, working plank by plank to avoid marks. Use a wide brush and spread the product thoroughly to reduce consumption and avoid excess.
  • Maintenance: a saturator is renewed on average every 9 to 18 months for decks, and every 2 to 4 years for cladding, depending on exposure. Monitor your wood: if the colour fades or water no longer beads on the surface, a new application is needed.
By following these tips, you extend the lifespan and natural beauty of your Douglas outdoor structures while reducing long-term maintenance. For more information, you can also consult our guide on Douglas wood maintenance.

WHY CHOOSE THE DOUGLAS SD600 SATURATOR instead of an oil or a stain ?

Choosing a Douglas wood saturator offers several advantages:

  • Unlike oil, it contains essential anti-UV agents for exposed decks and cladding, and does not require the tedious wiping step during application.
  • Unlike a stain or a varnish, it is non-film-forming: it does not peel and allows for simple maintenance.
  • It preserves the natural matte appearance of the wood while providing long-lasting protection.

The Douglas Saturator SD600 is therefore the ideal product to preserve the beauty, colour and durability of your Douglas outdoor structures.
